Best Companies Reveals Top Small North West Employers for 2025

Best Companies has released its latest rankings of the UK’s top employers, naming the organisations that achieved the highest levels of workplace engagement based on employee feedback. The annual survey recognises businesses across sectors and sizes, highlighting those that create positive, supportive and motivating environments. Out of the 75 small businesses listed nationwide, nine were identified as the best small companies to work for in the North West in 2025.

Stockport-based Sapphire leads the regional cohort. The contracting and accounting firm became employee owned in 2021 and reported turnover of £525m, pre-tax profit of £4.1m and EBITDA of £4.2m in June. Managing director Mark Connor said: “Reaching over £500m in turnover is a major milestone for Sapphire, and a reflection of the incredible momentum we’ve built since becoming employee owned in 2021. We’ve seen first-hand how powerful it is when everyone feels invested in the journey.” He added: “This milestone is about more than numbers: it’s about building something sustainable, innovative and inclusive.”

CyberLab, headquartered in Alderley Edge, was also recognised. The cyber security consultancy places strong emphasis on employee wellbeing, offering access to trained mental health first aiders, health initiatives and a wellbeing day after 12 months of service. Monthly one-to-one reviews, company stand-ups and an annual conference support communication. The firm was acquired by technology provider Chess in May 2023.

Cheadle-based SolutionsPT appears on the list too. Founded in 1985, the company focuses on industrial automation and IT solutions. It highlights a culture that supports continuous learning, alongside a bonus scheme where all employees benefit equally when profit targets are met. Its ‘Cheers for Peers’ awards recognise staff contributions, and the company has featured in the Sunday Times “100 Best Companies to Work For” for ten years.

Placefirst, a major build-to-rent developer with more than 2,000 homes nationally, is also among the top performers. The Salford-headquartered business provides Bupa healthcare, fast GP access and mental health support. Internal initiatives include Mental Health Champions and fitness sessions such as the Pacefirst running club.

Davies Partnership, a mechanical and electrical building services consultancy established in 1996, offers private health insurance, flexible working and an upcoming Employee Assistance Programme. Its Team Together days bring colleagues from Liverpool, Chester and Conwy together to strengthen communication and morale.

Manchester-based Andersen James Group focuses on community impact. The company says roles offer employees the chance to make a meaningful difference, describing a career there as “more than just a job” with involvement across local communities.

Pixel Inspiration, founded in 2004, is a key player in digital signage. The company attributes its success to a forward-thinking approach to employee engagement and a supportive environment designed to help staff succeed.

CFG Law, a specialist serious injury firm based in Cheadle, has 73 employees across three offices. It emphasises values of determination, clarity, support and pioneering. Wellbeing Champions, a Wellbeing Hub and regular check-ins form part of the support offered, with flexible and agile working encouraged.

Cheshire-based Uniform Group completes the list. The creative family of businesses, now 25 years old, works with major brands including Primark, Innocent and Zaha Hadid architects. The organisation credits its leadership teams with creating clear strategies and updates that shape goals, targets and job descriptions across all levels.
