Cumbria Floods Cause Major Road and Rail Disruption

Heavy rainfall continues to affect Cumbria, causing widespread travel disruption as several roads become impassable and vehicles are trapped in floodwater.

An amber weather warning, initially in place until 18:00 GMT, has been lifted, but a yellow alert for rain remains active until around 23:59 GMT. Authorities have urged people to avoid driving through flooded areas.

Cumbria Police have confirmed that the following roads are currently impassable:

  • A595 at Kirksanton / Holmrook

  • A596 at Castle Gardens, Whitehaven

  • A591 at Whitecross Bay, where vehicles are stuck in floodwater

  • B5300 from Maryport to Silloth

  • Brindleway at Seaton, closed due to a vehicle trapped in floodwater

  • The main road from Great Clifton to Clifton roundabout

  • Road at Braystone Holiday Village, blocked by a vehicle in floodwater

Other roads remain passable but drivers are advised to proceed with caution. These include:

  • A595 – Foxfield to The Green

  • A595 – between Kirkby-in-Furness and Askam-in-Furness

  • A7 at Sandysike / Westlinton

  • A6071 at Mill Hill

  • A6071 at Irthing Bridge, Brampton

  • B6263 – Wetheral to Warwick Bridge

Rail services have also been severely affected, with Northern advising passengers not to travel. The following routes are suspended in both directions:

  • Carlisle to Whitehaven

  • Carlisle to Skipton

  • Corkickle to Barrow-in-Furness

  • Barrow-in-Furness to Preston

  • Windermere to Oxenholme Lake District

  • Carnforth to Skipton

  • Lancaster to Morecambe

Currently, seven flood warnings and 19 flood alerts are active across the county, including at Keswick campsite. Cumbria Police continue to monitor conditions and warn the public to prioritise safety.
