Northumberland Rowers Receive Foundation Backing to Support International Ambitions

Two of Northumberland’s brightest young rowing athletes have received financial support to continue competing at the highest level.

Emma Nicholson and Esme Pugh, both 16 and teammates at Hexham Rowing Club, have each been awarded a £1,000 Inspiration Grant from the Bernicia Foundation, a charitable trust established by the North East housing association, Bernicia Group. The Foundation aims to direct funds where they are most needed, supporting local people living in hard-working communities across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham, and Teesside.

The Inspiration Grants are designed for young people aged 24 and under who are actively working toward personal goals. The funding can be used to cover costs associated with training, travel, competition, and other activities essential to their development. Bernicia Foundation also offers larger Inclusion Grants, of up to £10,000, for voluntary and community groups, registered charities, and social enterprises delivering projects that tackle economic and social exclusion.

Emma and Esme began rowing together in 2022 and quickly formed an outstanding partnership, competing nationally and internationally while also mentoring younger members of Hexham Rowing Club. Both help run “learn to row” sessions, passing on their skills and passion to the next generation.

Their competitive achievements include representing Great Britain at the GB vs France match in 2024, winning silver at the 2025 National Schools Regatta in the coxless four, and helping Team GB secure overall victory in the women’s quadruple sculls at the 2025 GB vs France J16 match.

The cost of pursuing elite rowing can be significant. Emma Nicholson said:

“Receiving the grant has meant I’m able to attend more events around the country and represent GB internationally. Some of the funding also goes towards training, which is essential. I’m very thankful, as without this support, I wouldn’t be able to compete for GB or spend as much time rowing.”

Esme Pugh added:

“The grant has helped cover race entries, travel, and accommodation costs for many events, which I’m very grateful for.”

Looking ahead, both athletes aim to continue progressing through the GB pathway and compete for international medals. Emma recently competed in Turkey at the Beach Sprints Rowing World Championships and is advancing through the British Rowing Diploma in Sporting Excellence and GB trials. Esme has also begun the GB trial process and hopes to continue competing at international level alongside university rowing ambitions.

Hexham Rowing Club coach Julia praised the pair for their dedication and sportsmanship:

“We’re incredibly proud of Emma and Esme. Their commitment, work ethic, and sportsmanship embody what our club strives for. Both girls have achieved so much in a short time and are outstanding role models, supporting and inspiring the next generation of Hexham rowers. The Bernicia Foundation’s support makes a huge difference, helping remove barriers that can hold back even the most talented young athletes.”

The Bernicia Foundation continues to champion local talent, with the Inspiration Grants helping young people realise ambitions that might otherwise be out of reach. Further information about the Foundation and its programs is available at berniciafoundation.com.
