Moyes: Everton Still a Work in Progress – But Progress is Real

David Moyes has reiterated that Everton’s rebuild is still in its early stages, stressing that while recent results have showcased clear progress, the squad requires time, stability and further strengthening to reach the level he demands.

Speaking at Finch Farm ahead of the Newcastle fixture, Moyes was candid about the club’s long-term trajectory. He highlighted that Everton remain in transition and that one transfer window alone cannot reshape a squad into a contender.

“It’ll take transfer windows and time,” Moyes said. “We’re still finding out what the ownership wants to bring to the club. But over the windows and coming years, we’re hoping the support is there to help us keep stepping up.”

The manager also acknowledged that Everton are evolving while competing against teams who have invested heavily over multiple seasons. Using Newcastle as a reference point, Moyes noted the contrast in squad development cycles but insisted that Everton’s direction is now clearer and more purposeful.

Despite the club’s current limitations in squad depth—particularly in midfield and full-back areas—Moyes believes the foundations of a stronger Everton are slowly taking shape.

“We’re learning as we go,” he said. “Newcastle have spent years building. We’re not at that level yet, but we’re improving, and performances like Monday night show where we can go.”

Moyes confirmed the club will explore opportunities in the January window while remaining realistic about the challenges of mid-season recruitment.

“January isn’t always a great window for value,” he admitted. “But if we can add, we will. We only brought Alcaraz in on loan last January, so we may look at the loan market again. The people behind the scenes are working to see what might be possible.”

Despite injuries and a compact squad, Moyes emphasised his belief in the group’s attitude and willingness to develop.

“The players have been great,” he added. “They’ve shown real levels since I’ve come in. We’re not the finished article, but we’re moving in the right direction.”

As Everton prepare for another major test, Moyes’ message is consistent: the project is ongoing, the climb will take time, but the mentality, structure and direction are already changing.
