Aston Villa 2-1 Man Utd: Morgan Rogers strikes twice to extend Emery’s winning run and reel in Arsenal

Aston Villa’s remarkable momentum showed no sign of slowing as Morgan Rogers delivered another decisive performance, scoring twice in a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park to make it ten consecutive wins in all competitions.

Rogers produced moments of real quality at key points in the contest, finding the net either side of half-time to settle a match that was otherwise finely balanced. United briefly threatened to derail Villa’s run when Matheus Cunha levelled shortly before the interval, but the hosts responded with maturity and control to see out another statement win.

Both sides started with attacking intent and early chances fell at either end. John McGinn forced a sharp stop from Senne Lammens, while Emiliano Martinez was equally alert to deny Benjamin Sesko as United looked dangerous on the break. The breakthrough arrived through individual brilliance, Rogers cutting inside from the right and bending a superb effort into the far corner to lift the home crowd.

Villa’s lead did not last long. A lapse in possession allowed Patrick Dorgu to pounce, and Cunha raced clear before finishing calmly to restore parity heading into the break. United’s confidence grew during a lively first half, but their task became more complicated after the restart.

Injuries disrupted United’s rhythm, with Bruno Fernandes forced off and further reshuffling required in midfield. Villa took advantage and once again it was Rogers who made the difference, curling a second precise strike beyond Lammens to re-establish the lead. United had opportunities to respond, most notably when Cunha headed wide from close range, but the equaliser never arrived.

The result keeps Villa firmly in third place and trims the gap to the summit to just three points, reinforcing their credentials as genuine contenders. United, meanwhile, missed the chance to climb into the top five and will spend the festive period in seventh, reflecting on another match where strong spells went unrewarded.

Rogers’ growing influence continues to define Villa’s season. Playing with confidence and composure, he has become the figure his side turn to when margins are tight. With Unai Emery’s team showing resilience, belief and cutting edge, the chase at the top of the table remains very much alive.
