Active Sunderland is encouraging residents to sign up early for its BIG Events in 2026, offering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active. The much-loved BIG 3K Run, BIG Walk, and BIG Bike Ride are all back, providing accessible challenges for beginners, families, and experienced participants alike.
Last year, over 1,500 people took part in the events, with all sessions selling out. Whether you are just starting out, returning to exercise, or seeking a new challenge, Active Sunderland’s BIG Events are designed to make it easy and enjoyable to get moving.
The BIG 3K Run returns on Sunday 17 May, running alongside the Sunderland 10K and Half Marathon. The event is ideal for beginners and families, offering a friendly and achievable first step into running.
On Sunday 12 July, the BIG Bike Ride provides cycling routes of 5, 12, 20, or 38 miles, starting from the Beacon of Light and showcasing some of the city’s most scenic cycling routes. Later in the year, the BIG Walk takes place on Sunday 27 September, beginning and finishing at Herrington Country Park. Participants can choose from 3, 6, 9, or 13.5-mile routes around the park and Penshaw Monument, catering to all abilities.
Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council, said: “The BIG Events are a brilliant way for people to get active, feel good and enjoy being part of something positive. Last year’s turnout showed just how much residents value these opportunities, and we want even more people to join us in 2026. Being active has huge benefits for both physical and mental health, and these events are designed to make it easy, fun and accessible for everyone. I’d encourage people to sign up early, secure their place and start their fitness journey with us.”
Entry prices for 2026 remain frozen, with adults able to join from £7.50, adults with a T-shirt for £12, and children from £7.50 including a T-shirt. Special family pricing is available for the BIG 3K Run. More information and registration are available via Events – MySunderland.
Active Sunderland encourages residents to start building healthy habits now. Regular activity, whether a brisk walk in the park, a jog along the seafront, or a cycle through scenic routes, improves fitness, mood, and energy levels. Training consistently ahead of the BIG Events ensures participants can enjoy the events to the fullest.
