The University of Liverpool has taken a significant step in shaping the future of its estate by appointing CBRE as its strategic property adviser. The appointment follows a competitive tender process and marks an important milestone as the institution moves forward with its plans to transform its circa 100 acre city centre campus. At the centre of this development is the University of Liverpool strategic property partnership, a relationship that is expected to guide long term planning and deliver broad based expertise.
The three year mandate covers the university’s extensive property portfolio, which includes almost 600 acres, 4.2 million square feet of non residential space and 5,100 student beds. The scale of the estate highlights the importance of the University of Liverpool strategic property partnership, with CBRE set to provide retained advice across Office Agency, Valuation, Development and Landlord and Tenant services, supported by a wide suite of specialist teams.
Work is already underway. The first task is an Estate Optimisation Review, due for completion by March 2026, which will help shape the university’s ambitious estate strategy. This phase will inform future decisions about development, investment and long term planning.
Neil Kirkham, head of CBRE’s Liverpool office, captured the significance of the partnership. He said: “We are proud to have been chosen as the University of Liverpool’s strategic property partner at such a pivotal time in its estate evolution. It promises to be a key partnership to help deliver the University’s strategic objectives to reimagine and future proof one of the city’s most important institutions.” He added that the mandate “reflects the strength and integration of our regional and national teams, our deep understanding of the University’s campus, the local market and our commitment to delivering exceptional outcomes for one of the city’s most important institutions.”
CBRE’s valuation advisory lead in Liverpool, Gavin Thomas, also welcomed the appointment. He noted: “University of Liverpool is entering a new phase of transformation, underpinned by its Liverpool 2031 Framework. We are proud to work with the University on its ambitious Estates Strategy, supporting its long term vision and goals which aim to reinforce its presence in the Knowledge Quarter, Liverpool City Region and beyond.”
From the University’s side, David Furnival emphasised the importance of the collaboration. He said: “We are pleased to partner with CBRE as we deliver our Estates Strategy 2031+ and create a world class campus experience that supports leading research, innovation and student success, while strengthening our contribution to the city of Liverpool and the wider region. This partnership is an important step in delivering the long term vision set out in Liverpool 2031.”
