Sporting Lodge Inn sale completes as hotel near Middlesbrough changes ownership

A hotel near Middlesbrough town centre has changed hands following an off-market transaction involving private investors.

The 140-bedroom Sporting Lodge Inn sale relates to a property situated around 4.5 miles south of Middlesbrough town centre, close to the A19 at Stainton, on the edge of North Yorkshire. The hotel includes a restaurant and banqueting suite and has been acquired by private investors.

The Sporting Lodge Inn sale forms part of the retirement plans of the previous owners, who had operated the business continuously since 2004.

The transaction was handled jointly by Simon Stevens Associates and Enterprise Hotels & Hospitality. It was completed off market and attracted competitive interest.

The freehold hotel also incorporates a leisure club featuring a fitness gym, a 25-metre swimming pool and wellness facilities. These amenities are available to hotel guests and are also supported by a strong external membership base.

Simon Stevens, founder of Simon Stevens Associates, said: “Amid strong competitive interest, we selected this investor because of their financial strength and proven track record in completing transactions.

“As established investors within the UK hotel sector, the Sporting Lodge Inn aligns with their ongoing expansion strategy.

“We continue to see strong interest from well-funded strategic investors, both domestic and international, who are actively seeking hotels with potential for repositioning.”

Gavin Wright, founder of Enterprise Hotels & Hospitality, said: “We are delighted to have completed the sale of the Sporting Lodge Inn to private investors.

“Having been under the same ownership since 2004, this transaction marks the close of an important chapter and the start of an exciting new era.

“We believe the hotel presents significant value-added opportunities for the new owners to enhance and grow the business further.”

Legal advice to the buyer on the Sporting Lodge Inn sale was provided by Katherine Cereghino and Owen Franks of Howes Percival. The vendor was advised by Richard Bellamy and Hannah Gaskell from Shoosmiths.
