Huddersfield Council Greenlights Station Gateway Regeneration Plans

Huddersfield is set to take another major step forward in its transformation, as cabinet members approved a new regeneration proposal for the area around Huddersfield Train Station. The scheme, known as the ‘Station Gateway,’ forms part of the Huddersfield Blueprint – the council’s overarching masterplan for the town.

The Station Gateway vision aims to create a dynamic, inclusive transport hub that enhances connectivity, supports sustainable travel, and drives economic growth while inspiring wider regeneration in the area. On the west side of the station, near Fitzwilliam Street, the plan proposes a new station entrance, a mobility hub, parking improvements, and upgraded public spaces to prioritise practical access for commuters and visitors alike.

Meanwhile, the east side around St George’s Square is set to be reimagined with vibrant landscaping, modern street furniture, and flexible spaces designed to host community events and gatherings. These improvements are intended to complement the ongoing transformation of the iconic George Hotel, the Estates building, and the Station-to-Stadium Corridor, while unlocking the redevelopment potential of St George’s Warehouse.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said:

“The Station Gateway vision is bold, creative, and builds on the significant investment already underway in Huddersfield through the Transpennine Route Upgrade and the Station-to-Stadium Corridor. It is a fantastic opportunity to improve connectivity, promote sustainable travel, and create a gateway that truly reflects Huddersfield’s ambition and is yet another step in our commitment to regenerate Huddersfield and create a modern vibrant town for future generations. Huddersfield is already undergoing a huge transformation, and these concepts add another exciting layer of growth and opportunity for the whole district.”

With cabinet approval secured, the council will now explore funding opportunities and potential development partners to bring the Station Gateway vision to life. The project forms part of a broader strategy to create healthy, vibrant town centres across Kirklees where people can live, work, and relax.

The proposal complements major ongoing investments, including Huddersfield Bus Station, Network Rail’s multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade, and the Our Cultural Heart initiative, alongside improvements to the town’s historic open market. Together, these projects demonstrate the council’s long-term commitment to revitalising Huddersfield and fostering growth across the wider district.
