Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) has completed a year of major transformation, opening several new buildings and clinical departments across its sites.
Since 2020, the Trust has invested over £100 million in buildings and clinical environments, delivering one of the most ambitious improvement programmes in its history. These developments support the Trust’s ongoing goal of providing the best care environments for both patients and staff.
The Emergency Care Building at Bassetlaw Hospital opened to patients in January, following completion in December 2024. The redevelopment includes a modern Emergency Department, an Acute Medical Unit, and a Children’s Assessment Unit. This has restored overnight paediatric inpatient care for the first time since 2017.
The project also introduced a refurbished Minor Injury department and a combined Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, merging medical and surgical SDEC services into a single area. These facilities improve patient access, streamline pathways, and create a more comfortable environment for families.
In March 2025, a new Imaging Suite opened at the Montagu Community Diagnostic Centre. The suite includes advanced MRI, CT, and ultrasound facilities, increasing local access to diagnostic testing and reducing pressure on acute hospital sites. The centre will provide tens of thousands of additional diagnostic appointments each year.
September saw the opening of the Phoenix Therapy Suite at Montagu Hospital. Equipped with specialist rehabilitation devices and interactive therapy technology, the suite offers stroke survivors and other patients access to treatments previously unavailable in the NHS. The bright, purpose-built space supports intensive therapy programmes for inpatients.
A new Clinical Research Hub also opened in September, providing a dedicated space for clinical research with a reception area, clinical bay, and support areas.
At Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), two key areas were introduced to improve hospital flow and emergency care. The Discharge Lounge was moved closer to the main entrance and public transport, with a patient pick-up area added. A new Surgical SDEC department was relocated closer to other emergency services to enhance rapid assessment and clinical coordination. Both spaces are designed to support smoother patient pathways and faster decision-making.
Diagnostic services have been expanded with new CT scanners. Bassetlaw Hospital now has a second CT suite to maintain continuity during routine maintenance. At DRI, a SPECT-CT scanner has been installed, combining structural and functional imaging in a single scan. Clinical areas and patient changing rooms were also upgraded to provide a calm and supportive environment.
Dr Kirsty Edmondson Jones, Director of Infrastructure at DBTH, said: “We’re delighted to see the progress made within the Trust to improve our patient facing areas, each milestone brings us closer to a modern, purpose-built environment. These developments will ensure our patients receive care in a space designed for the future, supporting the best possible outcomes.”
Major investment will continue in 2026 with the completion of a new Department of Critical Care at DRI. The building will provide 22 patient bays and enhanced clinical facilities for the Trust’s most vulnerable patients.
Zara Jones, Deputy Chief Executive at DBTH, said: “As part of our ‘Healthier Together’ strategy, we’re committed to improving the environments in which we provide care. These new facilities are fantastic examples of how investment in modern technology and infrastructure directly benefits our patients and local communities.”
