Story Explorers Exhibition Launches at Leeds Central Library

Little explorers in Leeds are being invited on a journey from the far edges of space to the depths of the ocean floor – without ever leaving the library.

Story Explorers, a new free exhibition at Leeds Central Library, opens today (February 19) and runs until May 30, 2026.

Designed as an immersive, family-friendly experience, the exhibition transforms the library into a landscape of imagination. A giant cuddly octopus stretches across one corner, while a striking model of the moon hangs overhead – setting the tone for an adventure powered entirely by storytelling.

A Journey Through Imaginary Worlds

Co-produced with the British Library, Story Explorers invites families to read, play, craft and create as they move through a series of imaginative worlds.

The exhibition brings together a collection of curious and colourful items drawn from Leeds Libraries, Leeds Museums and Galleries and the British Library’s own collections.

Alongside books, visitors can listen to recordings from the British Library’s Sound Archive, adding another sensory layer to the experience. An activity table encourages children to draw, build and bring their own stories to life.

Families can also browse a temporary mini children’s library installed next to the exhibition – extending the joy of reading beyond the display itself.

Encouraging Young Minds to Explore

Asghar Khan, Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, customer services and community safety, said the exhibition offers something special for young readers.

“It’s wonderful to be giving young readers the chance to explore whole new worlds of storytelling and to immerse themselves in these spectacular additions to the library.

“Reading has a unique ability to expand young minds and imaginations, and working alongside the British Library, this innovative exhibition is helping us to encourage young people to explore the library and its collections in different and exciting ways.”

Kenn Taylor, Senior Culture Manager North at the British Library, said the project reflects a wider commitment to the region.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Story Explorers to Leeds Central Library. Our collaboration with Leeds Libraries is part of the British Library’s wider commitment to the region, from our site at Boston Spa to working closely with local partners and communities in Leeds.

“Libraries are really special places, providing young readers with the opportunity to discover stories from all over the world. We hope Story Explorers becomes part of that wondrous journey of discovery.”
