A study released today reveals that canine food makes up a measurable slice of greenhouse gas emissions – 1% of the UK total* – while pets consume an estimated 20% of the world’s meat, creating an environmental impact equivalent to 13.6 million cars on the road each year.
Veterinary and university-led research suggests that reducing the environmental impact of pet diets doesn’t have to come at the expense of animal health. Studies comparing nutritionally complete plant-based and meat-based dog food have found no evidence of poorer health outcomes when diets are properly formulated, with reported benefits for digestion, skin health and sensitivities.
Commenting, Dr. Guy Sandelowsky, veterinarian and co-founder of Omni, said: “This research confirms what we know: meat heavy dog diets come with a serious environmental cost. What still surprises many people is that plant-based dog food is not a compromise on health. When it is properly formulated, the data shows it can actively support optimal gut and skin health, especially in dogs with sensitivities. At Omni we have seen a 600% surge in demand, and the biggest myth we hear is that dogs will not like it. In reality, many dogs choose Omni over meat-based alternatives when offered both.”
