Liverpool John Lennon Airport breaks all-time passenger record with busiest year in its history

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) has confirmed the busiest year in its 92-year history after handling more than 5.6 million passengers in 2025, breaking the airport’s all-time passenger record.

The record-breaking total surpasses the previous high of just over 5.5 million passengers, which was set in 2007, and represents an 11 per cent increase on 2024 passenger numbers. The milestone follows sustained growth throughout the year, with several individual months setting new records, including one of the busiest Decembers ever recorded at the airport.

Passenger growth at Liverpool John Lennon Airport has been driven by the continued expansion of services from its three main airlines – easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 – all of which increased capacity and routes during 2025, contributing to the airport’s strongest performance to date.

2025 also marked a significant year of investment in the passenger experience at LJLA, reinforcing its reputation as one of the UK’s best airports for ease, efficiency and customer satisfaction. Key improvements included the installation of the latest generation security screening equipment, helping to speed up passenger journeys, as well as the completion of an 18-month, multi-million-pound programme to upgrade and expand food and beverage outlets within the Departure Lounge.

In addition, the airport opened a newly expanded Aspire Executive Lounge last autumn, further enhancing facilities for premium and business travellers.

John Irving, CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, said:

“Breaking our all-time passenger record is a tremendous achievement for the airport and for all our business partners based here, and it reflects the enormous amount of hard work that has gone into making Liverpool the successful airport it is today.

“It is something we are all incredibly proud of and, as we look ahead to the start of 2026, I firmly believe we will go on to even greater success. We will continue to grow the business and provide passengers across the City Region, the wider North West and North Wales with even more reasons to choose Liverpool as their airport of choice.

“While this milestone is worth celebrating, we know we cannot rest on our laurels. We will continue to invest in new facilities and improvements to ensure passengers can benefit from the faster, easier and friendlier experience that flying from Liverpool John Lennon Airport is known for.”

The airport says it will continue to invest in facilities and services throughout 2026, supporting further growth while maintaining its focus on delivering a fast, easy and friendly passenger experience.
