White Rose Community Awards 2025 celebrate Leeds local heroes

White Rose Shopping Centre has celebrated some of Leeds’ most inspiring individuals and organisations at its annual Community Awards, recognising grassroots leaders, dedicated volunteers, and life-saving specialists who make a lasting impact.

The 2025 awards shone a spotlight on those working tirelessly to benefit others, with winners ranging from long-serving mentors to pioneering health professionals.

Among the recipients was Sunjeeda Hanif, Founder and Director of Women’s Whispers, who for five years has provided a vital lifeline for women in crisis, offering safe spaces, practical support and compassion that has helped countless women rebuild their lives.

Mark Hodgkinson, a volunteer for more than 20 years, was honoured for his dedication to mentoring young people through groups such as Space and Kidz Klub. He also organises community events including the Lantern Festival and fundraises tirelessly to create opportunities for families.

Tom Riordan CBE was recognised for his outstanding leadership and long-term commitment to Leeds. Appointed Second Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health and Social Care in 2024, with the approval of the Prime Minister, he previously served 14 years as Chief Executive of Leeds City Council, helping to deliver landmark regeneration projects including Trinity Leeds, First Direct Arena, and the White Rose leisure development. He also played a key role nationally during the pandemic in shaping the NHS Test and Trace Programme.

Other winners included Donna Russell and Matthew Lush of Leeds City Council’s Fostering Department, recognised for supporting care-experienced young people and fostering families; Dennis Robbins, CEO of The Hunslet Club, who has expanded the organisation to nearly 4,000 members; and Alison and Annamaria of Ahead Partnership, praised for facilitating careers programmes and school partnerships.

Professor Mat Callister was celebrated for his work on the Leeds Lung Health Check, a pioneering project that has delivered thousands of screenings, improving early cancer detection and saving lives. Katie and Ciara of Resurgo were awarded for running The Spear Programme, which supports young people not in education, employment or training with coaching, confidence-building, and skills development.

The awards also honoured Angela Vyas, West Regional Fundraiser for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, for her tireless work raising funds through events ranging from raffles to table tennis marathons, while building a network of volunteers to sustain the service.

Steven Foster, Centre Director at White Rose Shopping Centre, said: “South Leeds is home to many inspiring individuals and organisations, and it’s an honour to celebrate their passion, care, and commitment through our Community Awards. Each winner has made an incredible difference to the lives of others, and we’re proud to recognise their impact.”

The White Rose Shopping Centre, owned and operated by Landsec, has been a major community hub in South Leeds for more than 26 years. Alongside its 850,000 square feet of retail and leisure space, it has supported schools, youth initiatives, and health programmes, ensuring it remains a place where local life thrives.

The Community Awards continue that tradition, providing a platform for celebrating the people who make Leeds stronger, healthier, and more connected.
