Councillor Harland Awarded MBE in New Year Honours

More than a decade of frontline public service has earned Leeds councillor Mary Harland an MBE in the New Year Honours, recognising her sustained impact on communities across the city.

Cllr Harland, who has represented the Kippax and Methley ward since 2012, receives the honour for her political service and leadership at Leeds City Council, where she currently serves as executive member for housing. Over the years, she has become a key figure in shaping policy that affects thousands of residents, particularly those most in need of secure, affordable homes.

Her career at the council has spanned some of its most demanding portfolios. Alongside housing, customer services and community safety – roles that places her at the centre of neighbourhood-level decision-making and long-term social investment.

The record of delivery was acknowledged at the highest level. Prime Minister Sir Keir Stamer congratulated Cllr Harland on her award, describing her ‘remarkable contribution’ as councillor and executive board member. In his letter he wrote:

“Your dedication and service have made a lasting impact to your local community, and your commitment to excellence embodies the very spirit of the honours system”.

Despite the national recognition, Cllr Harland struck a characteristically modest note in response.

“It is really lovely to receive such an honour and I am delighted to do so. At the same time it is incredibly humbling, because you only have to look all around the council chamber to see so many colleagues who devote their lives to public service and serving our city and residents.”

The honours list also recognised wider contributions linked to Leeds City Council. Gail Faulkner was awarded an OBE for her work in children’s social care as former head consultant of the Leeds Relational Practice Centre, while George Munson received an MBE for services to net zero and the heat network centre following his role as the council’s energy and climate change manager.

Councillor James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council, said the awards reflected the depth of public service across the city.

“It is hugely inspiring to see those who have worked to make a difference across Leeds and beyond being honoured,” he said.

“Councillor Harland works tirelessly to improve the lives of people throughout the villages in Kippax and Methley ward, and across our city.

“No-one is more deserving of such an award and I am delighted to see a great friend and colleague receive such wonderful recognition of the great dedication she shows in her role every single day.

“Congratulations to all of those across the city who have received such well-deserved accolades.”
