Celebrate the impossible architecture of Monument Valley at the National Videogame Museum

Gamers and the public are invited to step inside the enchanting world of Monument Valley this December, as the National Videogame Museum partners with BAFTA-award winning studio ustwo games to present a captivating new showcase celebrating its acclaimed puzzle series.

The collaborative exhibition brings together the creative vision of ustwo games and the curatorial expertise of the National Videogame Museum, resulting in a unique experience that honours the artistry, design, and cultural impact of the beloved trilogy.

Monument Valley: The Trilogy celebrates videogames as an artform, providing unique insights into the series’ iconic impossible architecture, serene soundscapes, and emotive storytelling.

Initially released for mobile in 2014, Monument Valley took the world by storm with its innovative optical illusion gameplay and mind-bending landscapes. The original game was followed by Monument Valley 2 in 2017 and Monument Valley 3 in 2024, with all three titles now available across mobile, consoles and PC. Monument Valley 3’s expansion, The Garden of Life, has just been released across all platforms.

The exhibition invites visitors to engage with the world of Monument Valley in new ways, highlighting how game design, visual art, and narrative craft come together to shape one of the most recognisable mobile game series of the past decade.

A centrepiece of the exhibit will be a striking 3D model display depicting one of the Monument Valley maze levels. This installation is accompanied by Building the Impossible: The Making of Monument Valley 3, a behind-the-scenes video that offers an intimate look at the creative process behind the newest chapter in the series and the shared efforts to bring its world to life for museum visitors.

Throughout the festive period, visitors will be encouraged to immerse themselves in Monument Valley’s world with a rich selection of themed activities, such as designing Monument Valley inspired geometric puzzles and characters or unwinding in a cosy reading nook stocked with geometric puzzles and illusion-inspired books.

These activities invite guests of all ages to explore visual storytelling, creativity, and the joy of inventive puzzle design, reflecting the shared commitment of both organisations to inspire curiosity through interactive play.

For the National Videogame Museum, collaborating with ustwo games represents a landmark moment, bringing one of the world’s most iconic mobile game series into a cultural and educational space. As the UK’s national institution dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and interpreting videogame history, the Museum is proud to work alongside a studio whose creative achievements have shaped the global conversation around game design, storytelling, and emotional play.

ustwo games, best known for the award-winning Monument Valley franchise and the eco-adventure Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, continues to influence players and developers across the globe. By partnering with the studio, the Museum is able to showcase its artistic process firsthand, connecting visitors with the craft, creativity, and innovation that underpin its work.

Coinciding with the mobile release of Monument Valley 3 in Winter 2025, this collaboration offers audiences a timely and deeply insightful look at the evolution of the series. Through exclusive materials and close input from the ustwo team, the exhibition invites visitors to experience Monument Valley not only as a game, but as a piece of art and a cultural moment.

“The new Monument Valley model is a beautiful object, celebrating videogames as an interactive artform. We’re delighted to work with ustwo games, and honoured to present all three Monument Valley games as playable experiences in the Museum for the first time.” John O’Shea, Creative Director & Co-CEO, National Videogame Museum.
