Heritage Trams in Blackpool Extended Through November for Nostalgic Rides

Blackpool’s historic tramway is set to stay a little brighter this year, as one of the heritage trams in Blackpool will continue operating until the end of November.

The announcement comes as part of efforts to extend the nostalgic experience that has delighted visitors during the Lightpool Festival.

Two trams, including the much-loved model styled like a ship, have been operating along the resort’s seafront during the Lightpool Festival, which concludes on 1 November. The festival showcases a range of dazzling light installations and has drawn large crowds throughout October.

The vintage fleet had been suspended in December last year amid safety concerns and depot space challenges. However, their return has been warmly received by visitors and residents alike.

According to Blackpool Transport’s managing director, Jane Cole, the newly reintroduced vehicles were “proving [such] a huge hit” that the company decided to extend their operation until the end of November.

Among the most recognisable heritage trams in Blackpool is HMS Blackpool, a tram designed to look like a sea-going frigate. Created specifically for tours through the famous Blackpool Illuminations, it comes complete with strings of lights and even a ship’s horn. This striking design has made it a long-standing favourite with tourists and enthusiasts.

To ensure more people can “enjoy a nostalgic trip on board,” Ms Cole confirmed that the tram will continue to run three trips a night on Fridays and Saturdays, with the exception of 29 November. The extended schedule allows visitors to make the most of the darker evenings as the season progresses.

The route stretches from the Pleasure Beach to Little Bispham, giving passengers a sweeping view of the illuminated promenade. With nights drawing in, departure times have been adjusted slightly, with services now starting at 17:30 GMT.

The continuation of heritage trams in Blackpool highlights the town’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its transport heritage. Beyond their practical role, these trams serve as moving reminders of Blackpool’s rich seaside history, blending nostalgia with spectacle. Their presence on the tracks through November ensures that visitors can continue to enjoy a cherished part of the resort’s identity – a tradition that has long defined the charm and character of this famous coastal destination.
