St Oswald’s Church Closure Sparks Community Concern

A Hebburn primary school has expressed its “frustration” and deep concern over the potential St Oswald’s Church closure, warning that losing the historic building would be a huge blow to both the school and the wider community.

Church of England officials have begun the process of closing St Oswald’s Church in Hebburn, South Tyneside, along with nearby St Cuthbert’s Church, citing “falling congregation numbers” and a “lack of volunteers.” The move has sparked sadness and frustration among residents, worshippers, and families connected to the church.

Helen Smith, head teacher at St Oswald’s Church of England Primary School, which sits less than five minutes’ walk from the church, said: “The church has been here since 1883 – it would be a huge blow, not only to the school but the wider community, if it was to close.”

She described the church as “a spiritual home” for pupils and staff, explaining that while Sunday services may attract a smaller congregation, large school events such as harvest festivals and nativities regularly fill the church to capacity. “When we do worship events there and we fill it, the idea of going to a church further away just does not seem practical,” Mrs Smith added. “We feel it is really important that even if we can’t change the decision, our voices are heard regarding how this will affect our school community moving forward.”

The Diocese of Durham, which is managing the closure process alongside the Church Commissioners, confirmed that consultations are now under way. “If the churches do indeed close, the community will continue to be served by other nearby churches,” a spokesperson said, adding that anyone with “an interest” in the churches is invited to contribute their views.

St Cuthbert’s Church, which was also built in the late 19th century as Hebburn expanded, is part of the same proposed closure. Both churches have long been landmarks in the area and have hosted countless family milestones over generations.

Parents and former pupils have joined an online campaign to save St Oswald’s Church, sharing personal memories and messages of support. Local resident Gemma Seymour, whose three children attended St Oswald’s Primary, said: “It’s emotional as the church has been there for generations. My family have had weddings and funerals there.”

Year 6 pupil Harry echoed the sentiment, saying he hoped the church could stay open after “creating great memories” during his time at the school. “I was Christened there and I just feel it would be a big loss to the community in Hebburn if it was to close,” he said.

The Diocese of Durham said it “welcomes the views of the school and wider community” as part of the consultation. “We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful volunteers who have supported our ministry and community over the years,” a spokesperson added.

As discussions continue, St Oswald’s School and its community remain hopeful that their voices will help shape the church’s future — and preserve a cherished part of Hebburn’s history for generations to come.
