Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has once again been recognised for the quality and safety of its joint replacement surgery, securing gold level status in the 2025 National Joint Registry (NJR) Quality Data Provider Awards for the third successive year.
The accolade reinforces the Trust’s reputation as a leading provider of high-quality orthopaedic care, with both Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Northern General Hospital achieving ‘exemplary’ status under the national award scheme.
The NJR is an internationally respected registry that collects and analyses data on hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacement procedures across the UK. By tracking patient outcomes, surgical techniques and the specific implants used, it plays a vital role in improving the quality and safety of care.
Data submitted to the NJR is used nationally to identify best practice, reduce the need for revision surgeries and support clinical decision-making. It also provides important evidence for regulators, including the Care Quality Commission (CQC), helping to inform judgements about the quality of health services.
Under the NJR Quality Data Provider scheme, hospitals can achieve gold, silver or bronze status based on patient safety standards and compliance targets. Gold status is awarded only to organisations that meet rigorous audit and data submission standards.
Mr Amjid Ali, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Director of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Care Group at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said:
“We are incredibly proud to achieve gold level NJR status for the third consecutive year. This award acknowledges the vital contribution of our MSK clinical and audit teams in improving patient care and strengthens our reputation as a leading provider of orthopaedic surgery.
“The registry benchmarks performance against national outcomes, helping surgeons and implant manufacturers identify areas for improvement, whilst also acting as an early warning system for potential patient safety issues with the aim of improving clinical standards.
“This ongoing success is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our theatre and orthopaedic teams, whose commitment to accurate, compliant data underpins a strong culture of patient safety and excellence in care.”
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is recognised nationally as a centre of excellence for orthopaedic treatment. Its commitment to delivering timely, high-quality care was further strengthened in spring 2023 with the opening of a new state-of-the-art surgical centre, designed to provide faster access to orthopaedic procedures for patients across the region.
