A career shaped by listening to children – and learning from them – will be the focus of Professor Kate Knight’s inaugural lecture at the University of Chester on Thursday, 30 April.
Titled A Journey of Care, Courage and Change, the lecture will offer a personal and professional reflection on leadership across healthcare and education, grounded in compassion, equity and innovation. The event will take place both in person and online.
National Recognition for Teaching Excellence
Professor Knight is Associate Dean in Chester Medical School within the University’s Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society. In 2024, she was named a National Teaching Fellow by Advance HE – one of the highest individual honours in UK higher education – recognising her exceptional impact on student outcomes and the wider teaching profession.
Originally a registered children’s nurse, she has remained committed to improving the lives of children, young people and communities throughout her career, championing care, opportunity and inclusion at regional, national and international levels.
Transforming Practice Education
At the University of Chester, Professor Knight has reshaped practice learning through the development of a bespoke placement model now recognised nationally and internationally. Her work has significantly expanded placement opportunities across regional health programmes, helping to address critical shortages while ensuring safe, high-quality and inclusive learning environments.
Nationally acknowledged for her pioneering placement models, she has led innovative approaches that strengthen governance and safeguarding while supporting workforce sustainability.
A Lecture Rooted in Leadership and Learning
Her inaugural lecture will explore how children – described as her “youngest teachers” – have influenced her thinking on leadership, resilience and change.
The lecture takes place from 6.30pm to 8pm in Room 018 of the School of Education building at the University’s Exton Park campus. Attendance is free, but booking is essential for both in-person and online participation.
