Professor John Newell Price becomes Sheffield’s Clinical Research Director

Professor John Newell-Price has been appointed as the new Clinical Research Director at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The appointment places a recognised national and international expert in endocrine science at the forefront of one of the UK’s largest teaching hospital research portfolios. This development signals a continued commitment to integrating scientific advancement with patient centred care. Professor Newell-Price is an Honorary Consultant Physician at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield. His reputation in pituitary and adrenal disorders, genetic endocrine disease, neuroendocrine tumours and cancer is well established. In 2023 he was elected President of the Endocrine Society. His work with colleagues has helped develop Sheffield as a world leading clinical endocrine service where research and innovation are funded by UK Research and Innovation, industry and charities.

His leadership has extended to national roles with NHS England and the Royal College of Physicians to set care standards. Internationally he has contributed to evidence based clinical practice guidelines. Alongside this, he has maintained long term commitments to training students and early career researchers, as well as collaborating with patient groups. These elements form part of the foundation he brings to the position of Clinical Research Director Sheffield.

In his new role he will support the Trust’s research and innovation strategy. This strategy aligns with the 10 Year Health Plan for England, which aims to develop a future ready NHS through new technologies, medicines and approaches to prevention and treatment. He will also co lead the Clinical Research and Innovation Office, a joint initiative between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the University of Sheffield.

He also acknowledged Professor Simon Heller, who served in the role for 19 years.

Dr Nick Lyons, Chief Medical Officer (Development), said: “Professor Newell-Price brings a wealth of experience to the role and is passionate about integrating patient-centred care with leading-edge scientific research to foster innovation.” He noted that the appointment strengthens work highlighted as essential in the NHS 10 Year Plan. He also recognised Professor Heller’s contribution to pioneering research programmes and improvements in patient care.

Professor Tracey Moore of the University of Sheffield described Professor Newell-Price’s leadership and contributions as significant across South Yorkshire and beyond. She commented: “Professor Newell-Price’s exceptional leadership and internationally recognised contributions to endocrine research have made a significant impact on patient care and clinical research.” She also expressed thanks to Professor Heller for his dedication.

Professor Newell-Price began his role on 1 December 2025, marking a new chapter in the ongoing development of clinical research at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The appointment further consolidates the Clinical Research Director Sheffield position within a system recognised for teaching, research and specialist care.
