Beverley to hold White Ribbon Vigil to end violence against women and girls

A vigil in Beverley will take place on 25 November as part of an international campaign to end violence against women and girls. The event forms part of 16 Days of Activism, an initiative led by charity White Ribbon UK, which works with men and boys to challenge harmful attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate gender-based violence.

Residents are invited to gather at Wednesday Market at 18:00 GMT for a walk of solidarity to Toll Gavel United Church, where the vigil will begin at 18:30. Organisers hope the event will unite the community in showing support for survivors and promoting respect and equality.

Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding cabinet member for communities and public protection, said: “We all have a role to play in ending violence against women and girls.” She added that the vigil is an opportunity for local people to demonstrate their commitment to a safer, more compassionate society. “This event is an important opportunity to show our support and commitment to this cause, and we encourage residents to attend and pledge their support by signing up to the White Ribbon campaign.”

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Domestic Violence and Abuse Partnership service will be at the event to offer information, resources and advice. The vigil will also include speakers and song, creating space for reflection, solidarity and hope.

According to the National Audit Office, more than one in four women will experience sexual assault or attempted assault in their lifetimes. The vigil aims to raise awareness of this reality while calling for collective action to change it.

The event has been organised by the Women’s Institute Beverley and Beverley Town Council, with the support of East Riding of Yorkshire Council. For those attending, the Beverley vigil to end violence against women and girls offers a moment to stand together, honour victims, and call for a future free from abuse.
