Lancaster museums awarded £40,000 from the Museum Renewal Fund to support restoration, redevelopment, and local heritage projects.
Lancaster’s museums, which house rare Anglo-Saxon and Roman artefacts, have received over £40,000 in government funding to help preserve and enhance the city’s heritage. The grant, part of the £20 million Museum Renewal Fund, will be shared among 75 museums across England and will support upgrades at the 18th-century Cottage Museum, redevelopment of the City Museum, and cultural events across all sites.
Lancaster City Council said the funding would keep the museums accessible for local residents while creating more engaging visitor experiences. Councillor Sam Riches said the investment was a major step forward in safeguarding Lancaster’s heritage and inspiring people to connect with the city’s history.
The Museum Renewal Fund aims to help regional museums modernise and improve access for all, with Lancaster’s share ensuring its ancient artefacts and exhibits remain available to the public.
Alongside this grant, the council has also applied for £6 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support long-term redevelopment plans for the City Museum. If approved, the project would strengthen the future of Lancaster’s cultural sites, improve facilities, and promote the city’s identity as a centre for history and learning.
