Burnetts Solicitors, a long-established law firm based in Newcastle, has officially gained B Corp certification, joining a network of over 10,000 businesses worldwide that have met the rigorous standards set by B Lab, the not-for-profit organisation that manages the B Corp movement.
B Corp certification is awarded to companies that demonstrate high levels of social and environmental responsibility, alongside transparent governance and accountability. It signals that a business prioritises people and the planet as well as profit.
Nick Gutteridge, managing partner at Burnetts Solicitors, commented: “Burnetts was established over 100 years ago and we’re incredibly proud of the firm it is today. As the world has grown faster and seemingly more anonymous, we remain independent and true to our roots and values. We’ve always been about people – our team, our clients, our community, and our certification as a B Corp recognises that, along with our commitment to using our business as a force for good. This is a really happy day for everyone at and connected with Burnetts.”
B Corp certification evaluates performance across five impact areas: governance, workers, customers, environment, and community. In governance, companies are assessed on ethics, transparency, accountability, and how they embed their mission into operations. Workers are evaluated on fair compensation, benefits, job flexibility, health and safety, and development opportunities. Customer impact looks at ethical service delivery, data protection, and value addition to people’s lives. Environmental criteria examine how a business reduces its carbon footprint, manages resources, and minimises environmental harm. Community evaluation considers social engagement, charitable initiatives, and support for local economies.
Chris Turner, executive director of B Lab UK, said: “Welcoming Burnetts Solicitors to the B Corp community is hugely exciting. Its commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and will help spread the notion that success in business is as much about people and planet as it is profit.”
B Corps operate differently from traditional companies. While profit remains important, they are legally required to consider their impact on employees, customers, communities, and the environment. This legal framework ensures that business decisions are made with broader social responsibility in mind. Certification involves a detailed assessment and verification process to ensure compliance with high standards across all five impact areas.
Burnetts’ achievement reflects a commitment to using its legal expertise as a vehicle for positive change, maintaining the firm’s independence while actively contributing to social and environmental well-being.
