Abu Bakr Supermarket, a long-established Leeds-based grocery brand, has launched a new initiative to help children achieve their recommended “5 a day” portions of fruit and vegetables.
The campaign’s goal is to make fresh produce more affordable and appealing for families.
The range of family-friendly deals includes:
2 packets of grapes for £1
3 pomegranates for £1
2 mangoes for £1
5 oranges for £1
Mixed grapes for £1
Additional value deals on apples, pears, figs and other fresh produce are also available, designed to support parents and carers in encouraging healthier eating without increasing household food costs.
Hamza Hussain, the supermarket’s newly appointed Managing Director, said: “We know that many families want their children to eat healthier, but cost and convenience can sometimes get in the way. This campaign is about making fresh fruit accessible, affordable, and appealing for families, so children can reach their 5 a day without it feeling like a struggle.”
He added: “As a community-focused supermarket, we believe we have a responsibility to play our part in supporting healthier lifestyles, especially for the next generation.”
The campaign is now live across West Yorkshire, with further offers expected to expand healthy eating choices. The supermarket is also partnering with local food banks to help families budget while still accessing nutritious food and is working with the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. Additional collaborations with major brands are planned in the coming months.
Abu Bakr Supermarket has a long history in the area. The business began in 1987 when Abid Hussain, then just 17, took over the family store. His dedication and hands-on approach helped establish a strong community presence. A rebrand in 2002 to Abu Bakr Supermarkets marked the start of a steady expansion:
2002 – Queen’s Road store opened, first step beyond the original premises.
2004 – Roundhay Road branch launched, strengthening the Leeds footprint.
2015 – Beeston store added, increasing access for local families.
2017 – Major product expansion introduced fresh produce, halal meat counters, and international foods.
2022 – Kirkstall branch opened, reaching new customer areas.
2025 – Flagship store opened in Batley, further extending the brand across West Yorkshire.
The supermarket’s new healthy eating campaign continues this community-focused ethos, combining affordable pricing, nutritious choices, and support for families across the city.
