Hebburn Town FC Plans £2m Community Hub Upgrade

Plans to modernise Hebburn Town FC, supported by a £2m government grant, have been formally submitted for approval.

The South Tyneside football club, affectionately known as The Hornets, intends to undertake significant developments under its Community Hub Project.

The proposals include replacing the main pitch with a new FIFA Pro-certified artificial surface, alongside a second training pitch upgraded to 3G standard with new floodlighting.

A new South Stand is also part of the plans. This facility will house changing rooms, office space, a gym, a club shop, and a versatile function room.

Additionally, the club intends to expand The Sportsy Bar beneath the existing balcony area to provide improved amenities.

The planning submission follows the announcement of the £2m funding package earlier this year by Alex Norris MP, Minister for Local Growth; Kate Osborne MP, representing Jarrow and Gateshead East; and Stephen Rutherford, chief executive of Hebburn Town FC.

Sean Hedley, managing director of Hedley Planning, which is handling the submission, commented: “These are fantastic plans for a club which serves thousands of people in the local area and is woven into the fabric of the local community.

“This proposal is a collaboration with the Football Foundation, who will be delivering the 3G training pitch on site.

“Expansion of the football club not only represents a significant milestone in the club’s sporting success and on-going growth, but also a socio-economic commitment to the people of Hebburn and the wider borough of South Tyneside.”

A decision on the planning application is expected by 9 March 2026.
