Earlestown Market Square Redevelopment to Begin with Temporary Market Relocation

Work on the transformation of Earlestown Market Square is set to begin in January, following thorough consultation with market traders.

The main contractor for the redevelopment has been formally appointed as the Eric Wright Group. The project includes both the Market Square itself and enhancements to the public realm across Earlestown town centre’s high streets.

The scheme is part of a long-term regeneration programme led by St Helens Borough Council and ECF, a partnership between Homes England, Legal & General and Muse. Funding includes £20m from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, with a further £8m provided by the council.

Eric Wright Group has already carried out enabling works to prepare the site for full-scale construction. In October, four drop-in sessions were held with market traders to present plans and gather feedback.

To ensure continuity of trade, the market will be temporarily relocated along the neighbouring Market Street from January 2026. This will allow the Friday Retail Market and Saturday Flea Market to continue operating until the permanent relocation to the upgraded Market Square is completed.

The improvements will see Earlestown’s historic Market Square upgraded into a flexible, high-quality public space designed to serve the town for generations.

At the same time, HH Smith & Sons are progressing with refurbishment and extension works on the Grade II listed Earlestown Town Hall, scheduled for completion by Summer 2026.

Councillor Kate Groucutt, deputy leader and cabinet member for business and inclusive growth at St Helens Borough Council, said: “Market Square is central to the life of Earlestown, and this project will create a high-quality, vibrant space that supports both local businesses and community events. We are committed to keeping residents and traders closely involved throughout, and it is important that their feedback is listened to. The formal appointment of Eric Wright Group marks an important step in delivering this once in a generation project and I look forward to seeing main construction works beginning on site in the New Year.”
