Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS services are reminding people to stay safe and be ready over the New Year Bank Holiday period. Residents are being reminded to celebrate responsibly and plan ahead to ensure they access the right healthcare services if needed.
Emergency Departments at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital will operate 24 hours over New Year’s Day for serious or life-threatening conditions. For non-urgent issues, alternative services such as NHS 111 and community pharmacies may offer faster and more suitable support.
Dr Nick Mallaband, Acting Executive Medical Director at DBTH, said: “New Year’s Eve is traditionally a very busy time for the NHS, and we often see a rise in alcohol-related injuries and accidents that could be avoided. We want people to enjoy celebrating, but simple steps such as drinking in moderation, pacing yourself, staying hydrated and looking out for friends can help keep everyone safe and out of hospital.
“Planning ahead, knowing where to go for advice, and using the right service for your needs also helps ensure emergency care is available for those who truly need it.”
NHS 111 offers round-the-clock advice online or by phone, guiding people to appropriate local services. Community pharmacies may be open with reduced hours and can assist with minor ailments such as colds, coughs, sore throats, stomach upsets, and rashes.
For minor injuries including sprains, cuts, grazes, burns, and simple fractures, the Mexborough Montagu Minor Injuries Unit is open daily from 9am to 9pm, except on Christmas Day. Support for eye issues like red or irritated eyes, eyelid inflammation, or foreign bodies is available via the Minor Eye Conditions Service.
Residents are also advised to check medication supplies to cover the Bank Holiday and stock up on basic first aid and pain relief. Planning safe travel home, avoiding unnecessary risks, and looking out for friends and family are all recommended to keep the festive period safe.
Some outpatient clinics and non-urgent services may be closed on New Year’s Day. Patients with appointments should attend as scheduled unless contacted otherwise. The NHS App allows users to manage appointments and prescriptions conveniently.
