Cumberland Council invites Wigton Residents to Flood Preparedness Event on 3 February

Residents in Wigton are being encouraged to attend an upcoming event aimed at improving preparedness for emergencies, particularly flooding. The event, organised by Cumberland Council through its Fells and Solway Community Panel, will take place in the town’s Market Hall from 12 noon to 4pm on Tuesday 3 February.

Visitors will be able to learn more about flood risks and the support available to help households prepare. The FloodMobile van will be on site, alongside Flood Mary, property resilience champion Mary Long-Dhonau, offering practical advice to residents.

Those affected by flooding in Wigton in November 2025 will also have the chance to review the draft flood investigation report and provide feedback before it is finalised.

Other organisations attending the event include ACTion in Communities, Citizens Advice, and Futureproof Cumbria. Representatives from the Local Resilience Forum will also be available to give guidance on creating household emergency plans.

The event brings together activities originally scheduled for 27 January, which were postponed and have now been incorporated into the February session.

Cllr Justin McDermott, Executive Member and the council’s Public Health and Communities Portfolio Holder, said: “Preparation is the key in the event of an emergency situation such as flooding. Therefore, I would encourage residents to come along to this event in February and get the latest advice and guidance from the experts and find out what help is available to them.”

The event is being delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency.
