A key stretch of a well used Lake District route has shut to traffic while essential repairs take place. Resurfacing work on the A591 is under way at Chapel, near Bassenthwaite, with the road closed from Trafford’s Caravan Site to St John’s Church until 2 December.
Cumberland Council confirmed that a further phase will follow immediately afterwards, with repairs near Millbeck scheduled from 3 to 12 December.
The council said the works will affect travel to Keswick, although signed diversion routes are in place to keep traffic moving. Between 07:30 and 19:00 GMT each day, no vehicles will be permitted through the closed sections.
A spokesperson stressed that emergency services, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will still be able to pass at any time.
Access for local residents will be limited during working hours. However, the council said traffic marshals will be on hand to assist where possible and help residents move through the area safely.
