A major £164m regeneration scheme in West Lancashire has been approved, promising hundreds of new homes, businesses, and a solar farm. The development will take place at Grimrod Place in Skelmersdale, on land currently occupied by West Lancashire Council’s headquarters in Ormskirk.
The plan, led by council-owned company Tawd Developments, was agreed by borough leaders last week and is expected to transform the town centre. An artist’s impression shows modern three-storey apartment blocks above new shop parades, pedestrianised areas with street furniture, and landscaped spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Deputy council leader Gareth Dowling said: “This plan is about making West Lancashire a better place to live, work and thrive.” The project is part of a broader vision to rejuvenate Skelmersdale, providing new opportunities for both residents and businesses.
In total, the scheme will deliver 680 new homes, including 25 social rent properties, which are among the first developments to emerge from the Skelmersdale Town Centre Masterplan. Alongside residential units, eight new business units will be created to support local enterprise and job growth.
The regeneration also includes a solar farm, reflecting a focus on sustainable development. Council reports emphasise that the project aims to create a vibrant, mixed-use town centre, bringing together housing, commerce, and green energy initiatives in one integrated plan.
The approval marks a significant step forward in West Lancashire’s long-term strategy to revitalise its urban areas while providing homes, employment opportunities, and environmentally friendly infrastructure for the future.
